Hello! My name is Ms. Tanya. I am a passionate early childhood educator with over 20 years of experience in preschool, elementary, junior high, and high school settings. I currently teach Pre-K at Beard Elementary in Chicago Public Schools and bring a rich background in general and special education to my work with young learners.
I hold a Master’s in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelor’s in Secondary Education and English. I am certified in Special Education (Pre-K) and hold an ELL endorsement, which enables me to support a diverse range of learning needs.
My experience includes 10 years teaching in CPS Pre-K classrooms, four of which were dedicated to special education. I also spent five years teaching Pre-K in Catholic and Lutheran schools and seven years teaching high school English, drama, and junior high English. My specialty areas include early literacy, early math, and social-emotional learning (SEL). I have a strong track record of supporting students with ADHD and social-emotional developmental needs, creating engaging and structured environments where every child can thrive.
My teaching style is student-centered and grounded in the belief that all students can learn—we just need to meet them where they are. I prioritize creating intense routines and clear expectations to keep students motivated and focused while also nurturing their curiosity and confidence.
Outside of teaching, I love singing and reading—I was even the lead singer in a cover band for three years! I also have an impressive Converse sneaker collection that my students always enjoy hearing about. As a parent of two adult children with ADHD and anxiety, I bring not only professional experience but also deep empathy and understanding for students who need extra support with focus, motivation, and confidence.
I give teacher workshops on early childhood education each year and love sharing my knowledge with other educators. George Dorsey's guiding quote is: “Play is the beginning of knowledge.” I believe in the power of play and exploration as the foundation of learning.
I’m available for tutoring on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. during the school year and have greater availability during the summer. I prefer tutoring in person at libraries in the NW Chicago or Park Ridge area or virtually if that’s more convenient.
I look forward to working with your child and supporting their learning in a joyful, supportive, and engaging way!
