Social Emotional Learning

Back Home

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) foundations not only improve academic learning in students but are important for creating a healthy way of life.  SEL can increase a child’s happiness and engagement and reduce stress, anxiety and depression.  SEL Learning includes self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and decision making.  A child empowered with these skills is more available to access learning and make academic gains.

What does Social Emotional Learning (SEL) do?

  • SEL helps kids develop coping skills to manage feelings and interpersonal skills.
  • Improve social relationships
  • Reduce bullying, stress and anxiety
  • Develop and show empathy for others
  • Increase in success in school

The 5 core areas that make up SEL are:

Self-awareness or the identifying of emotions, strengths & needs

Self-management is the managing emotions & impulse control.

Social awareness can be learned through perspective taking, showing empathy and diversity awareness.

Relationship skills foundations are successful communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution.

Decision-making or making responsible decisions that include thinking about the consequences of your own behavior.
