When you let your children pick the materials (calling all older kids!) then they have to be intentional about what they are using. A specific type of tape, a certain size rubber band, etc. For younger children, you might want to have some "suggested" materials already picked out so they can use it as a boat buffet as they create.
One of our kiddos made this one out of an old water bottle, balloon, hair elastic, pennies, a straw, and tape!
Want to up the learning? Talk about it! Notice and name some of the things that they did. "I noticed that when the balloon is big, it pushes the boar further. When you blow the balloon up small, it doesn't move as far." "Wondering" also goes a long way. "I wonder why you added the pennies."
