Navigating Teacher Conflict with Grace

At some point, most families encounter a challenge with a teacher or school team member. Maybe you feel dismissed. Maybe your child feels misunderstood. Maybe a comment rubbed you the wrong way — or something bigger needs to be addressed.

It’s easy to come in hot. But what we’ve learned at JAM is that how you approach these conversations matters as much as what you say.

Start with this:
Assume positive intent, even if it’s been rocky
Use “I” language: “I’ve noticed…” instead of “You never…”
Be specific and solution-oriented

Example:
Instead of “You’re not meeting my child’s needs,” try: “My child seems to be struggling with transitions. What systems are in place right now, and how can we add support?”

Also — pick your moment. Email when emotions are high. Request a short Zoom or in-person meeting to reset if needed. Clarity + calm almost always lead to better outcomes.

If you need help preparing for a hard conversation with school, JAM can help you script it, practice it, and show up in a way that gets results — without creating unnecessary conflict.
