Throughout the RTI system, data is collected. If the child is still struggling to make progress, then (with the compiled information) they are referred to the special education team to do a formal evaluation. The goal is for each child to get the most effective instruction to make gains, be confident learners, and thrive in their classroom (tier 1). Tier 3 is often one on one instruction or small group instruction with a specially trained teacher.
FYI:
✨ Parents should always be informed of this.
✨ If you have concerns, make an appointment to conference with your child's teacher.
✨ Use JAM's RTI breakdown to understand the schools system.
✨ Ask questions! If something doesn't make sense to you- ask them to explain it until you understand. No question is a bad question. The school's job is to keep you informed about your child, their progress, and next steps.
✨ Get involved. (This might look a little different this year) but you can always email the teacher and introduce yourself to people around the school (assistant teachers, special education teachers, support staff, principals, etc.). The more people you know, the more comfortable you will be when you do have questions.
✨ Enjoy your kiddos. Know that there are so many people advocating for them- helping them- and nurturing them.
✨ Reach out to JAM if you have more questions or feel like your child's needs aren't being met. Our tutors and tutoring team are ready to help YOU!
