Consider this. You are very aware that they have a half an hour to do their homework before going to practice. Instead of them sitting down at the table and starting right away, they start melting down. You are unable to understand what they are trying to say, and you might be feeling a little frustrated knowing that their time for this task is dwindling.
Instead of adding fuel to their fire- try mirroring, or repeating, what they are doing. Try saying "I see your body is telling me that it is difficult to sit in a chair right now." or "I hear you saying that you are hungry for a snack, why don't you get started and I will prepare you something delicious while you work." Recognizing their feelings, and labeling what is happening helps them notice their own bodily cues.
Lean in, notice and name what is going on. It helps regulate your learner- and creates the space for work to get done. Our tutors and educational consultants are here to help with any questions or support you need.
