"When you know better, you do better."

"When you know better, you do better."

It's been assumed that learning to read is just as natural as it is to learn how to talk. Science is turning the whole language approach upside down and saying that explicit instruction around letter sounds, and word work is essential in order to teach all children how to read.

"The students who suffer most when schools don't give their students insight into the code are kids with dyslexia. They have an especially hard time understanding the relationship between sounds and letters. If you're a child with dyslexia from an upper-income family, someone is probably going to notice that you're struggling and pay for you to get the help you need. But kids from poor families often get left behind, and there's evidence that a disproportionate number of them eventually end up in the criminal justice system."

This is a must read article. The statistics around the Bethlehem Kindergarten before and after teacher training was shocking to me. How could we have been missing something that would help the entire class of readers for SO LONG?
